Joyce Hanks

Joyce Payne Hanks, 71, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. A native of Altavista, Va., she has been a resident of the Chattanooga area since 1977, and was retired from Hamilton County Schools. She was the daughter of the late James H. and Elsie B. Payne and was the wife of the late Lester C. "Tex" Hanks. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jennifer Peterson and Shirley Ferguson; as well as two grandchildren. Survivors include her ten children, Wanda Hoffmaster and Sandra Hanks, both of Chesapeake, Va., James "Johnny" Hanks, Clifford Hanks, Michael (Andrea) Hanks, Stacy Hanks, Tracy (Tonya) Hanks, William "Rusty" (DeAnne) Hanks and Calvin W. Hanks, all of Chattanooga and Teresa Hanks, of Sterling Heights, Mich.; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister, Loretta (Ronald) Bennett; Chillicothe, Oh. Local funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in the Valley View Chapel with the Rev. Dale Lovelady officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today at the Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, GA with the Rev. Joe Lusk officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital at St. Jude.org or to the American Society at cancer.org.
