Stan Cooke

J. Stanley Cooke, 82, of Hixson passed away on Friday, July 12, 2013. He had lived in the Chattanooga area all his life. Stanley spent his entire working career, at Dupont, ending up as manager of the building services section. He retired in May of 1985 after 36 years. He also built many fine homes part time and after his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the 773rd Artillery Battery from New Jersey. He served as the Battalion Physical Training Instructor.Stan was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Braden Cooke; a brother, Charles E. Cooke; Jr., parents, Charles E. Cooke Sr. and Lucille N. Cooke; and a grandson, Lewis ThackerSurvivors include his wife of 60 years, Mariam C. Cooke; two daughters, Terry Cooke Hamilton and Elizabeth Thacker; a son, John S. Cooke, Jr.; and a brother, Richard L. Cooke; grandchildren Meagan and Jesse Hamilton, Brandy Cooke and Rebecca Wilson-Jones and three great grandchildren.Stan played basketball for Central High School, and later studied architecture and business. He loved, painting, and sculpture, and surrounded himself with art. He studied piano and loved music throughout his life. Through his influence several of his children and grandchildren studied and excelled in art and dance.He was an optimist and had a positive vision of the future. The best that could be said of him was that he was a beloved and devoted husband, devoted father and grandfather, an old school hard worker, an honest businessman, and always a gentleman.A celebration of life service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, in the funeral home chapel.The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.Flowers, condolences and memories may be shared by visiting www.hamiltonfuneraloptions.comArrangements are by Hamilton Funeral Home & Cremation Services; 4506 Hixson Pike, Hixson, Tennessee. 423-531-3975.
