Wayne Barker

Kenneth Wayne Barker, 79, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013, with his devoted family at his side.Wayne was a devout family man and a proud Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. Wayne was a self-employed building contractor and had a passion for woodworking. Known to his grandchildren as "Papaw", Wayne was the foundation of a very loving family and will be sorely missed. Known to close friends as "Chief", Wayne left a lasting impression on those who knew him for having a strong work ethic, a passion for life, and a sincere passion and respect for his beloved wife of 56 years, Montress Dixon Barker, and their three loving daughters. Wayne was a lifetime member of Hixson United Methodist Church.Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Margaret Barker; and two sisters, Jimmie Barker Roberts and Virginia Barker Rhodes.He is survived by his loving wife, Montress Dixon Barker; three daughters, Lisa Barker Leiderman (Richard). of Spring Hill, Tenn., Kay Barker Billingsley (John), and Donna Barker Venturino (JP). both of Hixson. Additionally, he leaves his legacy to five adoring grandchildren, William Barker Fullbright, Kaitlin Billingsley Christopher (Eddie), Kindall Billingsley, Don Leiderman, and Kaleb Billingsley. He is also survived by a sister, Mildred Barker Wolfe.A very humble man, not one for flair, "Chief" will always be remembered as the rock solid foundation of the Barker family. His compassion for traditional family values will forever be fondly recalled by his family and friends.The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the MICU at Erlanger Hospital for the love and compassion during Waynes illness.Visitation and a celebration of Waynes life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.A private burial and rendering of final honors will be held for the family only.The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers that honorariums be made in Waynes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, www.easttennessee.jdrf.org or 865-544-0768 at East Tennessee Chapter at 355 Trane Lane, Knoxville, TN 37919.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
