Mary Blanchard

Mary Jane Forbes Blanchard passed away on Wednesday June 26, 2013. She lived her 91 years in Chattanooga, but enjoyed traveling with her family and friends to explore her Scottish roots, to support Tennessee football, or to follow a favorite literary character. She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Doctor George E Blanchard, Jr. and two sisters Ruth Forbes Burnette and Olga Frank Elder.Mary Jane received her bachelor degree from the University of Chattanooga in 1943. She taught English in Hamilton County for 38 years most of which was at Red Bank High and Hixson High. In addition to her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi book club, she volunteered at Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. Mary Jane was a life long member and an elder at Northside Presbyterian Church. She was active in the life of the church especially in teaching both children and adult classes.Mary Jane is survived by her daughter, Jane Blanchard and many nieces and nephews.Services for Mary Jane will be Monday, July 1 at Noon at Northside Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. David Kivett and the Rev. Dr. Valerie Carnes officiating. The family will receive friends following Celebration of Life service in the Centennial Room of the church. Private interment will be before the service.The family invites any former student including the award winning Blue and White Staff to serve as honorary pall bearers.
