Alma Hoback

Alma Shavers Wheeler Hoback, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, died on Monday, May 6, 2013. She was 85 years old.Alma was born on Sept. 30, 1927, to the late A. J. and Kittie Shavers. She was raised in Pisgah, Ala., and lived in Birmingham, Ala., before moving to Chattanooga.Mrs. Hoback worked at the Chattanooga News Free Press and the Hamilton County School System until her retirement. She was active in the Gideons Auxiliary, the First Baptist Church of Chattanooga and the Hoback Sunday School Class.She was married to Marvin Wheeler until his death and then she remarried to J.W. "Bill" Hoback until his death earlier this year.Mrs. Hoback is survived by Melissa Shavers and Terry Starkey, both of Pisgah, Ala.; Pamela Shavers Dodd, of Bryant, Ala., and Paula Griffin, of Atlanta; stepson and wife, Dr. James W. and Debra B. Hoback, of Signal Mountain.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 9, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Chattanooga, 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, with Doctor Thomas Quisinberry officiating.Interment will be at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South in Rossville.The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. today, May 9, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Chattanooga.Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402 or Gideons International, 50 Century Blvd., Nashville, TN 37214, 615-564-5000.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory & Florist, North Chapel, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
