Ruth Dunn

Ruth Ellen Smartt Dunn, 85, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 6, 1929 in Chattanooga. Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Willis E. Dunn; a son, Kevin Dunn; daughter, Melissa Dunn Cole; and a great-grandson, Matthew Dwyer. Ruth retired as a teachers assistant with Norfolk Public Schools after 32 years of service. She was a member of Gateway Free Will Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. She is survived by her family a son, Garland Harris and his wife, Ann, of Norfolk; daughter, Linda Fletcher and her husband Doug, of Pekin Ill.; brother, Erby Cody, of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; sister, Pauline "Dot" Parker, of Chattanooga. Also nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Gateway Free Will Baptist Church, 5473 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach. Burial will take place in Albert Horton Jr. Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 until 9 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach.
