Tom Johnston

Tom Lewis Johnston, 88, passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at the residence. Born in Summerville on April 12, 1926, he was a son of the late T.P. and Zula Mae Ballenger Johnston. Mr. Johnston graduated from Subligna High School and attended West Georgia College for two years, then was drafted into the U.S. Army, during WW II. He served in Germany and Austria with the 36th Infantry Division and was an observer at the War Crimes Trials in Nuremburg, Germany; was a life member of the V.F.W. He was a cattle farmer and worked for the Georgia Department of Agriculture retiring after 28 years service. Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by a sister, Libby Neal Rich. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Mann Johnston; daughter, Sandi Johnston Cohen; son, Tom Neal (Lyn) Johnston; stepdaughter, Tanya (Ruben) Queen; stepson, Stacy (Tina) Mann; grandkids, Chuck Cohen and Samson Johnston; stepgrandkids, Amber Padgett, Lexie Mann, Macey Mann, Addie Queen, Mason Mann; niece, Joan Butler. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Jody Brock and Larry Scoggins officiating. Interment in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers, Mike Dawson, Stacy Grey, Dennis McCary, Shawn McCary, Bill Mitchell, Randy Mills, Roland Jones and Ricky Jones. Honorary pallbearers, Stanley Cummings, John Hobbs and members of VFW Post 6688. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home from 5 until 9 p.m. today. Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
