Bernice Mayo

Bernice Veronica Mayo, 86, of Harrison, went home to be with the Lord and her loving husband, Wayne Martin Mayo, on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014. She was born on Jan. 17, 1928, in Waialua, Oahu, Hawaii. At age 23, she married and moved to the mainland with her husband, Air Force Sergeant, Wayne Mayo, of Chattanooga. For seven years, they lived in Hixson, while on active duty with the Air Force Reserve. They were members of St. Jude Catholic Church. After 20 years of military service, they made their permanent home in Harrison. She was an active member of the River Oaks Garden Club. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne M. Mayo; her parents, John I. Souza and Lucy Alameda Souza; and her sister, Catherine Pereira. Survivors include three children, Sharon (Rodney) Edwards, of Harrison, Brian (Sue) Mayo, of Flintstone, Ga., David (Sara) Mayo of Georgetown, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Christopher (Tamara) Edwards, Jason (Angie) Edwards, Jeremy (Katie) Mayo, Joseph (Heather) Mayo, Matthew Mayo and Ethan Mayo; seven great-grandchildren, Alex Edwards, Kristen (Josh) Hardin, Jada Edwards, Cooper Edwards, John Mayo, Julia Mayo and Peyton Mayo; three sisters, Evelyn Rogers, Sylvia Edgar, and Toni Nakamura, of Oahu, Hawaii; one brother-in-law, Ronnie (Peggy) Mayo, of Parma Hgts, Ohio; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins; other relatives and friends. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, Highway 153, Hixson. Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
