Samuel Mills

Samuel Clinton "Sam" Mills, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Soddy-Daisy Health Center. Born in Soddy, Oct. 20, 1933, he was the son of the late Harry S. Mills and Ruth Davis Mills. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bettye; and brother, Reece. Sam was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Chattanooga. He was a teacher for 37 years in Soddy-Daisy. An avid outdoorsman, Sam taught many youths the art of marksmanship. His involvement in hunting prompted the state of Tennessee to recognize his knowledge of gun safety. He was awarded citations for his teaching ability. Sam is survived by his wife of 52 years, Velma Davidson Mills; two sons, Harry (Michelle) Mills, and Brian (Amy) Mills. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Madalyn, Harrison, Jacob, Hunter, and Brett, who were Sams pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly Heard; and brother; Morris Mills; and an uncle, Ted Mills. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Don Lasley and Rev. Allan Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with naval military honors. Pallbearers are Johnny McGill, Joe Varner, Bobby Jenkins, Teddy Carl Varner, Gabby Williamson, Bill Morgan and Fred McAfee. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 1, 2014, and after noon on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at the funeral home. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.williamsonandsons.com.
