Hal Butler Jr.

Hal McPherson Butler Jr., 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, June 30, 2014. Mr. Butler was a 55-year member of First Baptist Church of Kingston. He was a member of the National Health Physics Society and of the East Tennessee Chapter of Health Physics. He received his B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from University of Chattanooga and was an AEC Fellow in Radiological Physics at Vanderbilt University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Butler was an employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 34 years, retiring as Director of the Office of Radiation Protection. His favorite hobby was golfing with friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hal and Addie Butler; brother, Charles Butler; sisters, Gaynell Wheeler and Mary Welch. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mildred Smith Butler; daughters, Karen Pentecost (Don), Memphis, Tenn., and Kristi Parks (Russ), Duncansville, Pa.; grandsons Dr. Will Pentecost, Seattle, Wash.; David Pentecost (Megan), Roy Pentecost, Memphis, Tenn.; Joe and Matt Parks, Duncansville, Pa.; granddaughters, Rachel and Rebecca Parks, Duncansville, Pa.; great-grandsons, Theo and Jasper Pentecost; brother, Delbert Butler (Jackie), Hixson, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 3, with Dr. Sonny Works officiating. Burial in Kingston Memorial Gardens.
