Von Sanders

Von Claude Sanders, who would have celebrated his 97th birthday on July 29, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 24, 2014. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was a 1937 graduate from McCallie School. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Russell Tate Sunday School Class of St. Andrews Methodist Church. He was retired from Duratec Lighting. Von was a Sergeant First Class and a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in WWII and in the Korean Conflict. He was responsible in relaying Eisenhowers cease fire message across Europe. He served 11 months in the European Theatre with the 3189th Signal Service Battalion as a teletype chief. He was an instructor in the 822nd Heavy Tank Battalion during the Korean Conflict. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #95, where he served as chaplain during the term when Bob Doss was serving as commander. He was a member as well of the VFW. He served as past president and board member of the Half Century Club and past president and member of the City Salesmens Club, Downtown Optimist Club, City Farmers, Chattanooga Engineers Club and was a founding member of Crime Stoppers. He loved to travel, dance, hunt and fish and always had a big smile and a good joke or story to tell. Vons presence at any gathering brought joy and laughter. He was the son of the late War W. Sanders and Lida Brown Sanders and was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Alene Michie Sanders; son, V. Scott (Carol Smith) Sanders; granddaughter, Meg Sanders; brother, Robert (Mildred) Sanders; brother-in-law, Charles Million; and sister-in-law, Jewell Campbell. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Liner Doss Sanders; son, Michie (Vicki) Sanders, daughter, Dr. Sharee Sanders (Gary) Miller, all of Chattanooga; granddaughters, Mary Beth Sanders, Laura Sanders, Rachel Miller, Sara Miller (Jimmy) Cross; great-granddaughter, Daisy Cross; nieces, Dorris Sanders (Henry) Fischer, Debbie Newby, Kathy Miller, Eileen Benson, nephew, Dr. Conrad (Claudette) Easley; and sister-in-law, Suzanne Million. A celebration of life and sharing of memories will be held at noon Monday, July 28, in the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Don Allison and Rev. Billy Dean officiating. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military rites being conducted by the American Legion Post #95. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today and from 11 a.m.noon Monday at the funeral home.
