Eva Ballew

Eva Hickman Ballew, 95, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014, in Dunlap, Tenn. Eva was in the grocery business for over 37 years. She first began as a clerk in a small grocery store in Dunlap in 1941. In 1944, she moved to Chattanooga and started work at the A&P Tea Company where she became a bookkeeper and worked for 28 years until her retirement in 1972. Later she worked for several years in the office of the M&J Supermarkets. After her retirement she moved back to Dunlap and lived there until 1985, when she returned to Chattanooga. Eva was a member of the North Chattanooga Church of God (Ministry Center) for over 65 years and for many years was the Sunday School department secretary. She was also a member of the Prime Timers at Red Bank Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Ballew; her parents, Floyd and Ida Hickman; siblings, Mona McLain, Noma Tucker and Claude Hickman. Her grandfathers, William Taylor Sims and Elias Hickman, were pioneers in the Sequatchie Valley and in Rhea and Hamilton Counties, respectively. She will be missed by her surviving nieces and nephews, June Keller, Atlanta, Ga., Elizabeth Dillard, Ooltewah, Carole Hubbard, Hixson, Wanda Hennessee, James McLain, Janet Land, Mark McLain, Rickey Hickman and Gary Hickman, Dunlap, Tenn.; Donna Rogers, Whitwell, Tenn.; and Byron Tucker, New York, N.Y. In addition, there are many great nieces and nephews who will also miss her. The family would like to thank those who cared so lovingly for Eva in her later years, both in her home and at NHC Dunlap. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, at the North Chapel. A celebration of life service for Eva will follow at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 3359, Chattanooga, TN 37404.
