Amelia Burzynski

Amelia "Amy" Burzynski died on Monday March 10, 2014 in Chattanooga. She was born on Feb. 13, 1921 in Detroit, Mich. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents, Anna and Peter Hiop; her brother, Julius Hiop. She is survived by her sons, Mark (Cathy) and William Burzynski (Margaret); daughter, Mary McMahon (Brian); grandson, Joey Burzynski; and granddaughters, Katie Burzynski and Sarah Wildman (Matthew). Amy attended Holbrook Elementary School on Grayling Street in Hamtramck, Mich. She later graduated Hamtramck High and attended college at Wayne State University. She was a celebrated womens field hockey player and voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by her High School classmates. She worked as a manager of Michigan Bell Telephone Co. and was active with the expansion of the International Institute in Detroit prior to marrying Joseph and starting her family. Amy married Joseph on May 9, 1953 in Hamtramck, Mich., and worked, as a caterer, for both Vladimirs in Farmington Hills and the Raleigh House in Royal Oak, Mich., before her retirement. Prior moving to Chattanooga, Amy was very active with the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church of Hamtramck, Mich., and participated in the "white house" kitchen operations with many close friends making delicious pyrohy and paskas for many church events and school fundraisers. A special heartfelt thank you to the many wonderful staff members at The Terrace assisted living community, the Eucharistic Ministry of St. Augustine Catholic Church, and the Hospice of Chattanooga, for the loving care given to Amy and her family during the last days of her life. Amy will be greatly missed by her family her many friends she made in both Detroit and Chattanooga. A funeral Mass will be held at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014, with Father David Carter officiating.
