Nellie Glidden

Nellie Evelyn Dill Glidden, 87, of Hixson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at Chattanooga Hospice Center in Chattanooga. The daughter of Benjamin and Leona Michaud Dill, of Gardiner, she was born and grew up in Gardiner, Maine. She graduated from High School in Gardiner, Maine. She started her career working for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. in 1945, and in Dallas, Texas in 1946-1947. She returned to the VA in Togus, Maine where she worked from 1947-1952. She worked for the National Guard in Augusta, Maine from 1952-1966 and worked as a Service Representative for Social Security in Augusta, Maine from 1966-1984. She finished her career working for the National Guard from 1984-1985, where she retired after 40 years of Federal Government service. She was president of Pray Street PTA, Gardiner, Maine from 1961-1963; she taught Sunday School at Winter Street Baptist Church in Gardiner, Maine for over 25 years and was a member of the prison ministry for the Kennebec County Correctional Center in Augusta, Maine for 13 years. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was president of the local chapter for 2 years, where she received a Meritorious Service award in 1991. She was a member of Whos Who of American Women from 1991-1993. She enjoyed camping and travel, working in her flower garden and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also loved her dogs and had many different ones over the years. Nellie was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Vernard Glidden. Also two sisters, Vesta Curtis, of Visalia, Calif., and Beatrice (Dessler) Giandrea, of Gardiner, Maine; and a brother, Benjamin U.C. Dill, of Gardiner, Maine. She is survived by her two children, son Scott P. Glidden and wife Mariam, of Visalia, Calif., and daughter Shelley L.G. Rowley, of Honolulu, Hawaii; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. There will be a celebration of life service from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, 8852 Dayton Pike in Soddy-Daisy. A second celebration of life service will be held in the early summer in Gardiner, Maine followed by a burial at Libby Hill Cemetery in Gardiner.
