Floyd Ashley

Floyd Albert Ashley, 84, of Chattanooga, died peacefully Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at his home. He was born July 2, 1930, in Chattanooga on Snow Street. Floyd spent the majority of his youth on Big Ridge, where he amassed a fortune in colorful stories gleaned from the characters he grew up with. For several years Floyds family ran Gold Point Marina, where his passion for the river and a love of boats was first born. After a tour in the Navy, Floyd met Vera, the love of his life. They shared a life together for almost 64 blessed years and bore three children on whom they doted all of the love and resources they had. Shortly before marrying Vera Juene, Floyd went to work at the Chattanooga DuPont Plant, where he worked the majority of his career as a boiler operator for 39 years before retiring. He spent the last 25 years of his life gazing peacefully at the Tennessee River flowing past his home. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Edith Ashley; brothers, Edward, Raymond and Wayne Ashley; daughter-in-law, Lorraine "Honey" Ashley (Mark). He is survived by his wife, Vera Juene Ashley; daughter, Vicki (Roy) King, of Hixson; sons, Mark Ashley, of Winchester, Tenn., Michael Ashley, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Becky (Gary) Thomas of Chattanooga, Ashley King (Brent Myers), of Dalton, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Leon Thomas, of Chattanooga, Desmond Myers, of Dalton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at Fairview United Methodist Church, 3901 Hamill Road. Officiating Pastors will be Clair Sauer and Baxter Cotton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Fairview United Methodist Church, or Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
