Carol Newman

Carol Cleveland Newman Carol Newman, born on Nov. 28, 1942, in Chickamauga, Ga., departed this life on July 17, 2016, at VNA Hospice of Philadelphia, Pa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Cleveland, Dorothy Morton Cleveland Haslerig and Willie A. Haslerig; brother, Willie A. Haslerig Jr.; and husband, Robert Newman. Carol graduated from Howard High School in Chattanooga, class of 1960. She attended Central State College and later graduated from the University of the District of Columbia with a Bachelors Degree. She continued her studies and earned a Master`s Degree from George Washington University. Carol began her career with Southern Bell Telephone Company in Chattanooga. In 1965, Carol transferred to Detroit, Mich., where she met and married Lark Carter,, and from that union their daughter, Tamara was born. Their marriage ended and Carol and her daughter relocated to Washington D.C., and continued her career with C & P Telephone Company. Carol married Robert Newman (her college sweetheart) in 1984. Their union formed a blended family. Carol relocated to Roberts home in Philadelphia and became active in Church, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was president two times of Valley Forge Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Carol retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Company after a 35 year career. She remained active in her church and sorority until her illness. Carol leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Tamara Carter, Tamera (Rev.Walter) Horton, Tanya Newman; granddaughter, Ariel Anderson; grandsons, Eric (Malika) Anderson, Robert Barlow, Javon Newman; sisters and brothers in law, Joyce and Thomas Harrison, Delores and Rev. Robert Hodges ; sisters in law, Ina Newman, Linda Newman, Isabelle Lawrence, Isis Gant, Frances Newman; Nora Marshall(Aunt), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and special friend Eugene Wiggins. Carol "Polly" will be sorely missed for her wisdom, style, intellect, concern for children and the less fortunate. Her greatest joy was witnessing the joy of others. A wake will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, Philadelphia, Pa.; funeral service to follow at 10 a.m. Arrangements will be handled by Beckett-Brown & Hodges Funeral Home in Philadelphia, 5618 Baynton Street, Philadelphia, Pa., 19144.
