Sherman Tanner

Sherman Hubert Tanner, 72, of Daytona, Fla., and formerly of Sequatchie, Tenn., passed away on Oct. 19, 2016, at his home, surrounded by family. He fought a long battle with Myelodysplasia Syndrome. Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Ann (Goins) Tanner; daughter, Gwen Tanner (Karl) Rosenwald, all of Daytona Beach, Fla.; son, Greg (Kristi) Tanner, of South Daytona, Fla.; grandson, Gregory Tanner; and great-grandson, Ayden Tanner, both of Ooltewah. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Edna (Pittman) Tanner; brothers, Bo and Sam Tanner; sisters, Carolyn Tanner, Lillian (Sal) Stanga, Betty Millraney and Thelma Cooke. Sherman was born on Jan. 12, 1944, in Jasper, Tenn. He enlisted in the Army in 1961, at the age of 17, where he spent three years. He married Mary Ann Goins on Jan. 23, 1965. They moved to Detroit, Mich., shortly after marrying. They had a daughter in 1966, with a son to follow in 1968. The family moved to Jasper, Tenn., in 1970. They moved to East Ridge, in 1975 and resided there until 1997, when they relocated to the mountain in Sequatchie, Tenn. After 15 years, they decided to move to Daytona Beach, Fla., in hopes of enjoying retirement. He was a retired from US Pipe, where he worked as a machinist for 37 years. He was a mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and Alhambra Temple, in Chattanooga. He also served in the U.S. Army for three years and the Army National Guard for five years. Sherman was a sports fanatic, having played softball as a young man and golfed in his earlier years. He coached tee ball, baseball and football, for his son Greg's teams during the 1970s. He loved his Tennessee Vols. After retirement, he took up gardening. His favorite pastime was lying in his recliner watching anything sports related on TV. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. I'm sure he knew that he was loved and will be missed by his family and friends. There will be no visitation or viewing of the body, as that was his final wish. The family would like to thank his oncologist Dr. Christopher Alexander and staff in Port Orange, Fla., and the staff at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Ormond Beach, Fla., for all of their hard work. Also, Pinello Funeral home for the handling of the body. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, if you wish.
