John Sponberger

DALTON — John H. Sponberger Jr., 88, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017, at his residence. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Crane; parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sponberger Sr.; three sisters, Dorothy, Mary Jo and Anna; daughter-in-law, Robin Sponberger; son-in-law, Brad Broome. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was an active member of Tunnel Hill Masonic Lodge #202. Survivors include his wife, Lou Ella Sponberger, of Dalton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Michael Haggard, of Ooltewah, Tenn., Beth Broome, of Tunnel Hill and Carla and David Jackson, of Dalton; sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Karen Sponberger, of Ringgold, Mitchell and Donna Sponberger, of Dalton, Brian Johnson, of Dalton and A. J. and Tonya Johnson, of Chatsworth; sister, Frances “Boots” McBride, of Mississippi; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Neal Hasty, Rev. Bill Gardner and Rev. Larry Wood officiating. The body will lie-in-state one hour before the funeral service. Burial will be in the Poplar Springs Cemetery with graveside masonic rites. Serving as pallbearers will be: Joshua Jackson, Bailey Sponberger, Spencer Crane, Brad Broome, Dustin Crane, Terry Johnson and Jake Sponberger. The family will receive friends at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home today from 5 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Masonic Children’s Home.
