Edna Ragland

Edna Raines Ragland, 83, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018. Born at Baylor Hospital in Waco, Texas to her father Dr. James M. Raines, whom she was preceded in death by, along with her sister Joan Raines Clay; she and her husband, R. Kirk Salter lived and operated a dog training and boarding kennel for dogs on Signal Mountain. Her first husband Charles Butler Ragland Jr. preceded her in death. He was the president of M&J Super Markets and father of her four children. She attended Ward Belmont in Nashville class of 1952. Edna was a gifted trainer and breeder of dogs and successfully won her class at Westminster Kennel Club with her prize collie, Jezebel. In later years, she experienced great success with her German Shepherd, Osco, in obedience. Edna was a great lover of dogs and horses and loved and cared for her land on Parsons Lane. Survivors are her husband, R. Kirk Salter, of Signal Mountain; sons, James Ragland, of Durham, New Hampshire and Dr. Charles B. Ragland III of Bloomington, Ind.; daughters, Catherine Fruth, of Lexington, Ky., and Ann Ragland, of Signal Mountain; brother, James Raines, of San Antonio, Texas; niece, Sondra Clay, of Houston, Texas; cousin, Dr. Oney Raines, of Gulf Port, Miss.; and her nine grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Signal Mountain at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to a cancer charity of your choice.
