Philip Rollinson

Dr. Philip Bruce Rollinson, Sr., 80, died on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Dr. Rollinson was born on May 13, 1939, in Chattanooga and was raised on Missionary Ridge. He graduated from McCallie School and then attended and graduated from the University of Chattanooga. After graduation he served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Essex as a Communications Officer. When he left the Navy he went to the University of Virginia where he earned his Ph.D. in English Literature. He went on to teach English at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina until he retired. He was a Bible teacher and Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia. He also frequently taught Bible at The Little Brown Church in Summertown, on Signal Mountain, Tennessee in the summers. He was a great teacher who taught with clarity and humor. He was an author of scholarly and Christian books and articles throughout his career, most notably, he translated the Westminster Confession into modern English, a resource that is still in use by many Reformed Churches. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Crosby Willingham Rollinson; and his brother, Mark Rollinson. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Carmen S. Rivera; his sister-in-law, Carole S. Rollinson; and his children and stepchildren; Ellen Rollinson Young (Courtney Richard), Elizabeth Rollinson Schmidt (David), Philip Bruce Rollinson, Jr. (fiancée Stacie Eadie), Jorge Antonio Rodriguez (Amy Elizabeth) and Adriana Cristina Rodriguez (Nicholas Edward Promin). He is also survived by his grandchildren; Ann Crosby Young Riles (Joseph), Molly Young Anders (Jared), Shelby Young, Ann Willingham Schmidt, Rebecca Emily Schmidt, Daniel Thomas Schmidt, Philip Bruce (Bo)Rollinson, III, Grant Turner Rollinson (fiancée Melinda Taylor), and by his great-grandson Joseph Edward (Tripp) Riles, III. There will be a service for family and friends at the Little Brown Church, Signal Mountain, Tennessee on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at 11 a.m.
