Merton Slutz

Merton H. Slutz died Tuesday, April 27, 2010.He was born March 17, 1925, in Providence, R.I.In 1935 he and his family moved to Knoxville. Following his graduation from Knoxville High School, he served in World War II with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific area. After completing his military service, he attended the University of Chattanooga. His career with the TVA spanned 37 years.Merton was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church until its closing, having taught Sunday School, been a member of the Chancel Choir and served on the Administrative Board.He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Homer Slutz and Jennie Hammond Slutz; and sister, Glenda S. Ballinger.He is survived by his wife, Annette Thomas Slutz; niece, Anita (John) Killeffer, of Chattanooga; Rebecca Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla.; nephew, Roger (Nancy) Thomas, of Jacksonville; great-nephews, William, David and Richard Killeffer, of Chattanooga; Kevin Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-niece, Bonnie Thomas, of Jacksonville.A private graveside service will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Marvin Howard officiating.There will be no visitation at the funeral home.Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.
