Laura Burbank

Laura Laing Swift Burbank, widow of Walter W. "Bill" Burbank, died on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at her home on Lookout Mountain. She was 91 years old.Mrs. Burbank is survived by her children, Walter "Terry" Swift and Camilla Burbank, of Lookout Mountain, Laura Burbank and James Smith, of New York City and James Carroll and Isabelle Burbank, of Charlotte, N.C. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Brice Burbank, of Chattanooga, Laing Foster Rikkers of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Berkeley Burbank, of Memphis, Virginia Foster Cannon, of Nashville, Laura Burbank Epperson, of Middletown, R.I., Billy Burbank, of New York City, Sarah Burbank McConkey, of Charlotte, N.C., Isabelle Burbank, of Charlotte, N.C.; and 10 great-grandchildren.She was predeceased by her grandson, McDaniel Burbank of Lookout Mountain.Laura Laing "Lolly" Swift was born in Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 1, 1919. She was the daughter of James Carroll and Laura Laing Swift. Lolly graduated from the Sunset Hill School for Girls in Kansas City and in 1941 from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. with a BS degree in Art. She married the love of her life, Bill Burbank, on Feb. 14, 1942 while Lt. Burbank was on leave from Fort Dix, N.J. After the war, the family lived in Greenwich, Conn., and Concord, N.C. before moving to Lookout Mountain in 1973. Lolly was always actively involved in community affairs; she was a founder of the Junior League of Greenwich; she was the second woman member of the vestry of the Church of the Good Shepherd where she volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Altar Guild and the Flower Guild; she was President of the Childrens Home of Chattanooga Chambliss Shelter, and she was a member of the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain.The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at the Church of Good Shepherd, Franklin Road, Lookout Mountain.Visitation will be at Talbird Hall at 1:30 p.m.Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga Inc., 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga TN 37416, or to the Childrens Home/ Chambliss Shelter, 315 Gillespie Road, Chattanooga TN 37411.Arrangements by Wann Funeral Home.
