John Alden

Jr.John Woods Alden Jr., 84, of Ooltewah, died on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.Mr. Alden was born on July 10, 1926 in Canton, Ohio, the only child of John W. Alden Sr. and Josephine C. Shoemaker.A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he served in the United States Navy from July 13, 1944 to September 1, 1946 then joining Combustion Engineering in East Chicago, where he met his wife, Irene Lyren.After completing an advanced degree at the Nuclear Reactor School at Oak Ridge, he joined the Nuclear Components Department of Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga. After retirement he continued his work as a consultant to the nuclear industry in Europe, the United States and Asia.An avid canoeist and outdoorsman, Mr. Alden was a founding member of the Tennessee Valley Canoe Club, which was instrumental in the creation of legislation preserving our national scenic rivers.He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Lyren Alden; son, John Alden III; and daughter, Elizabeth A. Clark.Mr. Alden is survived by a daughter, Victoria A. (John) Love; and grandchildren, Audry E. Clark and John R. Love (Olubunmi). He was the proud great-grandfather of twins Emmalyn and Sophia Love.He will be missed by family, friends and associates, most deeply by his dearest friend and companion in adventure Savannah Jacobus.The family will receive friends for visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at the North Chapel with Rev. Jeff Briere officiating.Interment will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.Arrangements are made by Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
