Al Slater

Alfred T. Slater, 90, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, Oct. 29, 2010.He was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon at Mile Straight Baptist Church. In his early years he enjoyed Golden Glove Boxing. Al was a United States Marine Corps Veteran serving during World War II and later he retired from Combustion Engineering. Over the past several years he has loved Soddy-Daisy High School Athletics.He was preceded in death by his parents, A.T. and Martha Slater; brother, Robert "Bob" Slater; and two sisters, Ruby Dill and Thelma Moe.He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Fern Slater; three sons and daughters-in-law, Al and Jane Slater, Carl and Sarah Slater, Steve and Lisa Slater; brother, Norman Slater; grandchildren, Dale, Greg, Tanya, Gabe, Jeremy, Tiffany and Joel; and 10 great-grandchildren.The funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, with Dr. Al Goss officiating.Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors.Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday.Condolences and memories may be shared at www.williamsonandsons.com.Arrangements are by Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, 8852 Dayton Pike, Soddy-Daisy, TN 37379.
