Agnes Smith

Agnes Gore Smith, 87, of Chattanooga died the morning of September 7, 2010.Agnes was born in Overton County, Tennessee on April 4, 1923, to parents Ova Dora and Edward Gore. During World War II, she worked testing parts for B-29 aircraft, the type on which her husband, J. Thomas Smith, served.A long-time resident of Chattanooga and member of the East Ridge Church of Christ, Agnes worked many years as Activities Director for a local nursing home. One of the first in this area to introduce pet therapy, she was appreciated by many for her dedication to enriching the lives of patients and easing the concerns of their families.Known for her handmade quilts, homemade bread and coconut cake, Agnes also enjoyed reading, antiquing, classical music, and flower gardening.Preceded in death locally by her husband, J. Thomas Smith; daughter, Lynda C. Erwin; Agnes is the last survivor of her seven sisters and brothers: Clinton, Hazel, Johnnie, Kitty, Stella, R.L., and Robert. Agnes was also predeceased by her nephew, Mark Reed, of Anderson, Ind. Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Kuhnell; niece, Gayle Harris Morton, both of Chattanooga; other survivors include granddaughter Melissa Kuhnell of Washington, D.C.; and nephews Phillip Harris and Douglas Harris, of Dayton, OH, and Jeff Reed, of Anderson.Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, September 10, 2010 at the North Chapel with Minister Charles Cochran officiating.Entombment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.Visitation will be from 1-2:30 p.m. prior to the service on Friday, September 10, 2010 at the North Chapel.
