Jack Brown

Jack R. Brown, a former Assistant District Attorney, died on Tuesday, the 28th day of September. He was 89.The Rhea County native was the son of John R. Brown and Laura Cofer Brown. He was a member of Graysville Church of Christ.He enlisted in the United States Navy soon after graduating with the Rhea Central High Class of 1940 and served before and during World War II aboard naval vessels in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. After his ship completed operations in the North African invasion at Casablanca, he transferred to a midshipman training program and upon completion, he was commissioned an Ensign and returned to sea duty aboard a Pacific carrier.Upon release from active duty, he remained in the active reserve and attended the University of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee College of Law where he received the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree and soon thereafter received orders to active duty in battleships with the Seventh Fleet operating off the Korean coast in the Sea of Japan. Upon return to civilian life, he engaged in the private practice of law and served as an Assistant District Attorney for eight years and remained in the Ready Naval Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.He served for two terms as a Governor of the Chattanooga Bar Association and was a member of several Bar associations; the American Legion, the VFW, The Soddy Lions Club and the North River Sertoma Club.He was preceded in death by sons, David Clark Brown and Jack Mitchell Brown.Survivors include his wife, Martha Medley Brown; daughters, Sherry Jordan, of Charlotte and Laura Bradford, of Birmingham; three sons, Steve Brown, of Soddy-Daisy, James Jordan, of Mobile and John Lindsay, of Winder, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. and Honorable Sam Payne officiating.Visit www.lanefh.com to share condolences.Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace.
