Sibley Evans

Sr.Sibley Bryce Evans Sr., 91, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, in a local hospital. He was born in Wise County, Va., and grew up in Coeburn, Va. He attended Bluefield Junior College and transferred to the University of Chattanooga in 1938, where he played halfback on the Mocs football team for Coach Scrappy Moore.Upon graduation from the University, he taught English and coached football, soccer, baseball and was the director of the Summer Camps at Baylor School for 24 years. After retiring from Baylor, he served as Headmaster of Cleveland Day School in Cleveland, Tenn., and The Bright School in Chattanooga. In later years, he held positions at Brock Candy Co. and the Hamilton County Juvenile Court.Mr. Evans taught Sunday school for over 40 years and was a charter member of Trinity Woodmore United Methodist Church. More recently, he became a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church and belonged to the Wesley Sunday School Class.Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Mildred Evans; his wife of 62 years, Martha Dillard Evans; and his brothers and sisters, D. C., Chet, E.A. "Worry", Leona Kyle, and Uneeta Wren.He is survived by his children, Mary Lou (Chad) Stanford, Sib (Alice) Evans, Dillard (Christy) Evans; his sisters, Faye (Jack) Elswick and Val Lee; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Nick) Gibson, Stephen (Marcia) Stanford, Bryce (Betsy) Evans, Joe Evans, Kelly (Paul) Thompson, Emily (Jonathan) Byrd, Emory Evans; seven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Brainerd United Methodist Church with Dr. Dennis Flaugher officiating.
