Russell Thornbury

Russell C. Thornbury, a lifetime resident of Chattanooga, passed from this life to his eternal home on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. He was 90 years of age.He received his education in local schools and the University of Chattanooga. He retired after 43 years of service with Combustion Engineering where he held a number of management positions. As a member of the Chattanooga Area Safety Council, he was recipient of the Safety Appreciation Award in recognition of his work in promoting safety in local manufacturing plants.He was a former member of the Optimist Club and Chattanooga Personnel Club. He was also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons for 68 years.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He organized and supervised the Welfare and Recreation for the Industrial Manager, 8ND and was awarded a Commendation for Outstanding Performance of Duty.An active member in the Baptist denomination, he was a member of Stuart Heights Baptist where he served in various capacities including the deaconship and Bible School teacher.He was past president of the Hamilton County Baptist Association and Tennessee Baptist Convention Brotherhoods. He served as Music Director in a number of local Baptist Churches. During retirement, he was director of HaCoBACare Ministries, a volunteer benevolent nonprofit organization. He also was a recipient of the Jefferson Award in the Category of "Unsung Heroes".Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Juanita; sons, William R. and Russell L; daughters, Carlene Jone, Carol Hoodenpyle and Nita Rankin; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Visitation will be 4-7 Saturday, Jan. 15 and one hour prior to the Sunday service at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace.A service honoring his memory will be held Sunday, January 16, 3 p.m. with the Reverend Gary Jared officiating. Reverend Darrell Davenport will conduct a committal service following the Chapel service.
