Betty Murphy

SEWANEE Betty Miller Murphy, 82, passed away Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, in an Atlanta Hospital.Born in Chattanooga, Betty grew up and graduated in 1946 from Dade County High School.She and her husband raised their family in Chattanooga, Tenn., where they were active members of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church. Betty was a member of the Pioneer Sunday School Class and for many years helped with the preparation of the Wednesday Night dinners. Betty also enjoyed being a real estate agent for Century 21. The last five years of her life were spent in Atlanta, where she lived with a daughter.She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Murphy; and mother, Bessie Burns.Survived by sons, Jim Murphy (Mitzl), Bill Holden (Caroline); and daughters, Virginia Tollison (Ted), and Janet Bandy. She was blessed with four granddaughters and two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.The burial will be today, Jan. 23, in Deerhead Cove, Ala., at 4 p.m.There will be a memorial service and visitation on Monday, Jan. 24, at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, in East Ridge, Tenn. The service will begin at 11 a.m. and the visitation will take place after the service in the recreation center of the church.In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made in her memory to Jones Memorial UMC, 4131 Ringgold Road, East Ridge, TN 37412.She will be remembered for her servant heart and being a loving, caring, selfless spouse, mother and friend.
