Richard Shockley

Deputy Chief Richard Eugene Shockley, of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2011.He passed away at home with his wife, Jan, at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Shockley was born on Sept. 3, 1938, to Blaine G. Shockley (deceased) and Effie Arnold Shockley in Newark, Ohio. He became reacquainted with his high school friend, Jan Branch at their 50th class reunion in Miami, Fla., and thereafter they were married on Valentine's Day 2009. Richard was previously married to the late Hertha C. Beierling Shockley, from this union, two daughters were born.In 2008, he was fortunate to become associated with Sheriff Jim Hammond and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department where he has served as Deputy Chief of Corrections. Prior to this, he served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1961. He then began his law enforcement career with the Miami Dade Police Department and later relocated to Fort Collins, Colo. There he served in many capacities before being elected Sheriff of Larimer County, Colo. where he served two terms. At the time of his death, he and his family resided in Hixson.In addition to his wife, Jan, he leaves to cherish his memory; daughters, Ericka Theresia Ellis and Angela Renee Shockley; stepsons, David Hunter Howard and Scott Rycroft Howard; mother, Effie Arnold Martin; sister, Joanne Labbe; grandchildren, Jordan and Blaine Ellis; mother-in-law, June P. Scott, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department and a host of relatives, friends.Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Grace Calvary Chapel with Pastor Tim Millsaps and Sheriff Jim Hammond officiating.Honors will be provided by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Chief Deputy Allen Branum officiating.Graveside military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force.The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at Grace Calvary Chapel, 8615 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343.Arrangements are by locally owned and operated Legacy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Soddy-Daisy.
