Nelson Campbell

Nelson Chambliss Whitaker Campbell died at home on Monday, March 28, 2011.The daughter of Samuel Estill and Lillian Nelson Chambliss Whitaker, the granddaughter of Madison Newton and Florence Jarratt Griffin Whitaker and Alexander W. and Lillian Carter Nelson Chambliss, she was born in the home of her maternal grandparents on Bluff View, on Jan. 4, 1921, and grew up in Riverview, Seattle and Washington D.C. She attended Bright School and GPS before her fathers assignments with the Department of Justice pulled the family out of Chattanooga. A year or more of her secondary education took place in Seattle; it was completed at National Cathedral in Washington D.C. She studied briefly at King Smith College and later took some courses at George Washington.In 1939, she married Paul Campbell Jr. who survives her. Their married life began in Washington, and they lived in Buffalo and Philadelphia before returning to Chattanooga in 1943. She loved people, books, ideas, art & music, her home, the natural world and her church -- First Centenary United Methodist. For a quarter of a century or more, she led the Discussion Class at that church where week in and week out they puzzled over the writings of many of the leading thinkers of the 20th century. She loved and learned from all in the class.Over the years, she served on various boards and had particular fondness for the Childrens Home/Chambliss Shelter, the Northside Neighborhood House and Hospice. Her strong affection for the latter was reciprocated at the end of her life, and her family notes with appreciation the services Hospice provided that so supported her in her final days. The family also notes its appreciation for the faithful service of long-time caregivers, Verna Bailey, Phyllis McClure, Brenda Tinker and Marilyn Gilbert. In addition to her husband, she is also survived by her four children, Nelson Douglas Campbell; Paul (Emily) Campbell III; Michael Ross Campbell; and Douglas Meriwether (Faith) Campbell; and 10 grandchildren, Nelson Meriwether Campbell, Vermont; Eleanor W. Whitaker (Matthew Shallbetter), Virginia; Paul Campbell IV; Kolter M. Campbell, Chicago; Ransom Whitaker Campbell, Nashville; Hunter Alexander Campbell; Crayton Foster Campbell; Katherine Overton Campbell, New York; Douglas M. Campbell Jr., San Francisco; James M. Campbell. Lastly she leaves two great-grandchildren, Tristan Rhys Shallbetter and Kes Briallen Shallbetter.Her brother, Samuel Estil Whitaker Jr. predeceased her.A service in her honor will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011, at First Centenary United Methodist Church. There will be a visitation at 12:30 that morning.Memorials can be made to any charity, but her family notes its collective appreciation for Hospice and her long devotion to the Childrens Home Chambliss Shelter and the church.Arrangements by Wann Funeral Home.
