Evelyn Johnson

Evelyn Rudd Johnson, 99, left this world to go home on Monday, March 26, 2012.Evelyn was born on June 2, 1912, in Gadsden County, Fla., the daughter of the late Major and Elma Poston Rudd. Evelyn graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Mount Pleasant, Fla. She received her bachelors degree from Florida State College for Women in Education and her masters degree in Education from Florida State University. Evelyn taught school in Henson, Florida, Mount Pleasant, Fla., and Tallahassee, Fla., after she left the classroom in Tallahassee; she was Leon County Reading Supervisor. She retired in 1977, but remained active in the Leon County Education Association of Retired Teachers. Evelyn was a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority and Alpha Delta Kappa, Education Sorority. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Tallahassee where she taught Sunday School. In 1993, she moved to Signal Mountain, Tenn., to be near her daughter and family and was a member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church.Evelyn was preceded in death by her siblings, Jack Rudd, Marguerite Lambert, Carrie Lee Beane and Eloise Mathis.She married her late husband Sidney Tyler Johnson in 1934. Evelyn is survived by her two children, Gloria J. Montgomery and her husband Jack of Signal Mountain and Sidney Tyler Johnson Jr. and his wife, Jenny, of Lander, Wyo.; her grandchildren, Mary Evelyn Montgomery, Franklin, Tennessee, Rudd Montgomery and wife, Becky, of Signal Mountain and Jessi Johnson, of Lander, Wyo.; her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Louisa Rose Montgomery; and her brother, Earl Rudd of Tallahassee, Fla.There will be no visitation here in Chattanooga.A memorial service will be announced by the family at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Evelyns name to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga at 1201 East Main St., Chattanooga, TN 37408, or to the Arthritis Foundation at 6504 Deane Hill Drive, Suite C, Knoxville, TN 37919 attention Lauren Root.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
