Carrie Green

Carrie Mae "Granny" Green, 80, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at her home. She was was born in Stevenson, Ala., to Dimple Washington and Robert L. Cobb Sr.Having confessed her hope in Christ and declared him her Lord and Savior at an early age, she was a steadfast worker in each church of which she was a member. But no matter where she went, New Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church was always home. She served there in many capacities, from cook to driver to social worker to advocate to comforter to comedian to jailhouse lawyer and just about any other job that needed to be done. However, she was most passionate about her work with the Missionary Society, the Virtuous Women and the Robina Mack Sunday School Class. She was known throughout Chattanooga as the lady who always had plenty to share, even if it meant she would go without. Throughout her life, but especially when she worked for the city of Chattanooga Department of Human Services, it was not uncommon for her children to come home and discover that they were going to have to share what little they had and make room for another "brother" or "sister". When they asked, why? The answer was simple: "Because he/she doesnt have anywhere to go, and I am not going to let him/her sleep on the street." The same was true when friends and/or relatives where at the end stages of life. Her home became there hospice because she was not "going to let them die in a hospital or nursing home alone." Such stories are legion and are testament to the unlimited love and compassion she had and showed for all people, regardless of their race or economic circumstance. She lived her life as our Lord commands: She loved God with all her heart and soul; and she loved her fellowman even as Christ loved her.She was preceded in death by her daughters, Dimple Green-White and Beatrice Green; granddaughter, Edria "BJ" McWhorter; mother, Dimple; father, Robert and brother, Robert L. Cobb Jr.She is survived by five daughters, Beverly Bogan, Yevola Green, Mary (Pastor Eugene) Stamper, Amanda Cowan and Jacqueline Green, all of Chattanooga; and one son, Attorney Fredrick H. L. (Marlina) McCLure, Tampa, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; aunts, Annie Maude Talley and Georgia M. Matthews, Stevenson, Ala.; devoted cousins, Washington, Porter, Martin, Hopkins and Cobb families; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She also leaves to mourn two special lifetime "sisters", Geraldine Billings, Knoxville, and Virginia Floyd, Chattanooga; a host of her "adopted children" and many others who had a special place in her life.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012 at New Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Terrance Hannah officiating.Interment in Highland Memorial Gardens. The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 68 p.m. today at John P.
