Dorothy Steele

Dorothy Gibson Steele of Signal Mountain, widow of Dr. Willard Hinds Steele Jr., passed away on Monday, Aug. 6, 2012.She was born in Bellaire, Ohio on June 28, 1916. She attended public schools in Bellaire, Ohio, and Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. She has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga since 1948, and has been active there in Women in the Church. She was formerly a member of the Fairyland Club, the Junior League of Chattanooga, and the Junior League Garden Club (past president). She served as leader of a Cub Scout troop (Boy Scouts) and also as a leader of a Brownie troop in St. Elmo and a Girl Scout troop on Lookout Mountain. She was active in the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Auxiliary, volunteered for Changed Lives Ministry, and served on the Boards of the American Red Cross and the Childrens Home (past Board President).Mrs. Steele is survived by two sons and one daughter, Dr. John Richard Steele (Diane), of Atlanta, and his children, Brooke Steele Powell (Jeremy) and Hillary Steele Britt (Travis); Dr. Robert Gibson Steele (Julia) of Salisbury, N.C. and his children, Andrea Guion Steele and John Alexander Steele; and Barbara Steele Leake (Leon) of Marietta, Ga., and her daughter, Ashli Paige Oliver (Spencer). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Ashli Oliver, Liliana Steele Oliver, Etta Rose Oliver, and Vivian Josephine Oliver. Additional family members are Mary Steele Evans, the surviving sister of Mrs. Steeles deceased husband and Mrs. Evans daughter, Mary Bashie Evans. Her brother, Errol C. Gibson is deceased and is survived by Jeanne Gibson, of Huntersville, N.C.Memorials: Changed Lives, Box 100, Chattanooga, TN 37401; Childrens Home/ Chambliss Shelter, 315 Gillespie Road, Chattanooga, TN 37411; Alexian Village Scholarship Fund, 100 James Blvd., Signal Mountain, TN 37377; or charity of your choice.A memorial service for Dorothy Steele will be held in the Chapel of Alexian Village on 100 James Blvd., Signal Mountain, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16.
