Howard Hamby

Harvey "Howard" Hamby, 74, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. at his home.He was born Nov. 30, 1937 in Dayton, Tenn., to the late Arley Hamby and Katherine Lucy Howard-Hamby. He was a 1956 graduate of Central High School in Manchester, Tenn., and received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn. in 1963.Howard was a licensed civil engineer and worked for the state of Tennessee and for T.V.A. for over 28 years in the Foundation Design Section and also as a civil engineer for Sargent & Lundy.He was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America Troop #254 for over 35 years. He was the recipient of many honors including the Vigil Honor, Wood Badge and the Silver Beaver Award.He served in the Army National Reserves for six years including the 844th Engineering Battalion.Mr. Hamby was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church and was a founding member of Shallowford Road United Methodist Church.He was an avid outdoorsman and cattle farmer.Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Helen I. Hamby; one daughter, Kathy Hamby Damewood and her husband, Randy, of Manchester, Tenn.; two sons, Lloyd H. Hamby, of Ooltewah, Michael Hamby and his wife Melinda, of Murfreesboro; one sister, Mary K. Colwell and her husband, Frank, of Smithville, Tenn.; one brother, James A Hamby and his wife, Joyce, of Hixson; six grandchildren, Lindsey Hamby, Lacey Hamby, Elizabeth Damewood, Isabelle Hamby, Emma Kate Hamby and Harrison H. Hamby; and several nieces and nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Tyner United Methodist Church with Rev.
