Mary Smith

Mary Meyer Smith, of Chattanooga, passed away at home with her family with her on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. She was 79 years old.Mary was born in Chattanooga and was a lifelong resident. She was a 1951 graduate of Central High School and received her Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Social Work and Clinical Psychology. Mary was very active in social work and was employed with the State of Tennessee Welfare Department for many years. She retired from the Family and Childrens Services in 1996 and was over the Homemaker Services for seven counties in the Southeast Region. She was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Womens Missionary League.She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Smith; her parents, Carl Detlef and Augusta Rose Pfitzer Meyer and her brother, Clifford Meyer.Mary is survived by her sons, David Newton Smith and Daniel Detlef Smith and his wife Lee Lane Smith; two grandchildren, Sarah Elane Smith and Carl Detlef Smith; siblings, Carl Detlef Meyer, Augusta Meyer Gehring and Louise Nelson and her husband William H. Nelson, Jr.; many nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to Noon today, Dec. 24, at the North Chapel.Funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church, 2800 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404 with Pastor Mark McCrory officiating. Burial will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
