Dave Brotherton

LAKEMONT Dave Brotherton, 75, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, with his wife, Faye and niece and nephew, Laura Beth and T.J. by his side.He graduated from Rossville High School in 1954 and is a member of the Rossville High Sports Hall of Fame. Dave was a devoted father and husband, a dedicated Georgia bulldog fan, an avid collector of pottery, a gospel music aficionado and enjoyed playing golf in his retirement years. He was of the Baptist faith and was an ordained deacon.He was a lifelong educator and worked as teacher, principal, administrator and superintendent of schools. He served as superintendent in Baldwin County, Ga., Tallassee City, Ala., and retired as superintendent in Fayette County, Ga. Dave viewed the education of children as a calling and had a special talent for recognizing potential in young people. Dave mentored many new school superintendents and was a consultant to school systems throughout the region.Dave always believed in service to the community. Through the years, he acted as a city councilman and volunteer firefighter in Rossville, was a member of the Jaycees and Rotary clubs and, most recently, served on the board of Lakemont Highlands Homeowners association.Dave was preceded in death by father and mother, H.L. and Ilda Brotherton; infant son, Joseph Lee Brotherton; and brother, Tom Brotherton. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Faye McKay Brotherton; the pride and joy of his life daughter, Anita Kay Brotherton; brother and sister-in-law, H. L. and Betty Brotherton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Frankie McKay; sisters-in-law, Jeanette McKay and Jane Brotherton; nieces and nephews, T.J. and Laura Beth Newsom, Luke and Lisa McKay, Jonathan and Linnie McKay, Joe and Julia McKay, Andy and Debbie Jordan, Gerin and Angie Choiniere, Billy and Marty Washington, Bryan and Lucy Ward, Beth Brotherton, and Rick and Lori Govan; "grandchildren", Matthew and Micah Newsom, Sawyer, Elijah, Sam and Sydney McKay and Morgan McKay.Contributions may be made in Dave's memory to the charity of your choice.Condolences may be sent to www.lane-southcrestchapel.com.Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fairview Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Bennett and Rev. Luke McKay officiating.A visitation will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory.
