Marcus Oliver

SEWANEE Marcus Lane Oliver, died Thursday, May 24 2012, of natural causes.He was preceded in death by his parents, William Washington and Alice Millner Oliver; and by his sister and five brothers.He is survived by his wife, Ann McCulloch Oliver, Sewanee; their four children, Scot Oliver, Boise, Idaho, Lane (Bill) Caldwell, Moscow, Idaho, Eric (Ellen) Oliver, Blacksburg, Va., and Hunt (Patton) Oliver, Sewanee; eight grandchildren (Heather Magruder Jaynes, Alex Magruder, Louis Oliver, Catalina Oliver, Camas Gazzola, Cullen Gazzola, Emma Standefer and Ada Watkins); two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.Mr. Oliver was born on June 14, 1921 in Norfolk, Va. He was an alumnus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and U.N.C., Chapel Hill. He served the former in the Alumni Association and the Placement Service before becoming director of development at the University of the South. Following retirement, he lived in Blacksburg, Va., and was active as a volunteer in the New River Valley Hospice and Montgomery Regional Hospital. He spent his final years with family in Asheville, North Carolina and Sewanee.A service at the University of the South will be announced.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial gifts consider a charity or organization of their choice.
