Frances Carter

Frances Abigayle Roller Carter died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.She was born on Jan. 16, 1943, daughter of the late O.E. and Frances Broadway Roller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Bradly Carter.Frances was the owner of Crystal Springs Skate Center from 1976 to 1991, Crystal Streams in Pikeville, Tenn. from 1980 to 1985, the Crystal Lanes Bowling Center from 1985 to 1991 and the Crystal Springs Pool for over 60 years. She is best known as the one who taught most of Rhea County to swim.Frances became the first female school bus driver for the Rhea County School System where she drove for over 30 years. In her youth, she won numerous medals for swimming in the Junior AAU Olympics. Frances starred in several films for her water skiing skills in 1947.She loved sports, especially softball, bowling, swimming and snow skiing.Survivors include her husband, John Carter Sr.; children, John (Luana) Carter Jr., Toby (Debbie) Carter, Tony (Donna) Carter and David (Christy) Carter, all of Dayton; godson, Dwayne (Amy) Roddy; grandchildren, John Carter III, Chase Carter, Jill Carter Swafford, Jesse Carter, Drake Carter, David Napier, Leayn Carter, Alina Carter, Quinton Carter, Jordan Carter, Hannah Carter, Brianna Carter, Condra Lea Carter and Cannon Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at The Grove (Walnut Grove Church), located at Rhea County Highway and Walnut Grove Church Road, with the Rev. Jimmy Jewell officiating.
