Newell Allison

Newell Sanders Allison passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012.He was born on Jan. 1, 1928 in Chattanooga and was nicknamed "Sarge" as a child. He was educated at the Bright School, the McCallie School and graduated from Bolles Academy in Jacksonville, Fla. He then volunteered to proudly serve his country in the US Air Force. Captain Newell S. Allison was a highly decorated combat pilot with the 49th Fighter-Bomber Group in Korea, flying F-84 jets in over 100 combat missions. His professional life began in the textile industry where he was an independent yarn broker until his retirement.He was a member of Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church and served on the Men's Club. He also served on the Lookout Mountain Planning Commission. He was a longtime member of the Lookout Mountain Fairyland Club.Sarge never met a person he didn't like or who didn't like him. His zest for life included horseback riding, tennis, skiing, woodworking, flying, travelling, music and cutting the rug. His joy of life, optimism, sense of humor, and love of family was manifested in all he did.He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Matthews Allison and Pansy Sanders Allison; his brothers, Joseph Hill Allison, Ben Matthews Allison, Jr. and sisters, Corinne Allison Howell and Liza Allison Goree. He is survived by his wife, Laura Hedges Allison; four children, Dorothy Allison Sutter (Trey), Newell Sanders Allison, Jr. (Ellen), Laura Allison Jones (Tom) and Ben Matthews Allison, II; 12 grandchildren, Tommy, Elliott and Ben Sutter, Kaitlin , Emily, Margaret, Mimi, Newell and Corinne Allison, Laura, Allie and Lizzie Jones ; 2 sisters, Mildred Allison McDonald and Pansy Allison Marler (Clarence); as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful puppydog, Molly.Services will be held at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, Lookout Mountain, GA on Monday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. and Visitation at the Parish Hall is at 3 p.m. Honorary Pallbearers will be his nephews: Edd Allison, Mac and Jim Ferguson, Jimmy and Mac Hedges, Charlie Howell, Frank McDonald, and Jim and Mikey Willingham.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Cecilia's Abbey Attn: Sister Mary David Totah 3136 Franklin St., San Francisco, CA 94123, or the charity of your choice.
