Katherine Mansfield

Katherine Drapes Mansfield entered into the Kingdom of God on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012 escorted with an army of Gods mighty angels while her three sons were united at her side. She smiled with her beautiful eyes as she fell asleep to take this wonderful journey.She was the daughter of the late John Drapes Sr., of Stevens Point, Wisc., and the late Muriel Martin, of Gordonsville, Va. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Riley Garnett Mansfield; and brother John Drapes Jr.Katherine was born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and spent much of her youth in Stevens Point, Wisc. She moved to Norfolk, Va., during World War II working in the war department where she met her husband to be. After the war she and Garnett moved to Chattanooga making a permanent home for their family.Katherine led a very active life in Chattanooga as her husband and children were one of the five founding families of St. Martins Episcopal church where she served in leadership capacity for many yearsIn the late 60's and 70's Katherine was a pioneer in the gift and art gallery business with the opening of the Town Crier, where many friendships were developed and was famous for her Russian tea, scented holiday candles, antique music boxes along with her cheerful smile and great conversation.Survivors include her three sons, Harry and Michael Mansfield, of Chattanooga, Patrick Mansfield, of Jamestown, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.Graveside services will be held at the National Cemetery on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Shawn Meed and Father Jim Wallace.Pallbearers are Parrish Mansfield, Joe Mansfield, Chad Mansfield, Brian Mosley, Roger Sylvester and Jim Burke.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road.The family would like to thank Chattanooga Hospice for their excellent care and concern for Katherine and her family during her final days.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice in her name.
