George Blanchard

Dr. Jr.Dr. George E. Blanchard Jr., of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013. He was 91 years old.George was born and raised in Chattanooga. He graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1939, received his degrees from the University of Chattanooga and his Doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in education. George proudly served our country in the United States Army where he was a member of the 20th Armored Division during World War II. He served in the division that liberated Dachau and was awarded two Bronze Stars. George was an educator and taught at Chattanooga High School where he was named assistant principal. He was the principal at both Elbert Long School and Tyner Jr. High before his retirement from Hamilton County. After his retirement he taught at Chattanooga State Community College. George was a longtime volunteer at Memorial Hospital Downtown, where only one other person served more volunteer hours at the time. He loved his church and was a longtime member of the First Church of the Nazarene where he sang in the choir. George was an avid Tennessee Volunteer fan and was a member of the Half Century Club.Dr. Blanchard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Jane Forbes Blanchard; daughter, Jane Blanchard; many nieces and nephews.Services for Dr. Blanchard will be held at 1 p.m. today at the North Chapel with Pastor Eric Johnson officiating.Burial will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Church of the Nazarene at 5455 North Terrace Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37412.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
