Sally McCrady

SEWANEE Sally Kelso Buck McCrady (b. May 7, 1936), died peacefully Thursday, April 11, 2013, outliving her husband, Edward "Ned" McCrady, by only ten weeks. Sweethearts from a young age, they enjoyed a devoted marriage for over 57 years.Sally was born in Knoxville, the second daughter of Stratton Buck and Emily Bailey Buck. The family moved to Sewanee in 1941 where Sallys father taught French at the University of the South. Throughout her childhood Sallys family spent summers at the Chautauqua at Bay View, on the shores of Lake Michigan. She attended Sewanee Public School, Bairnwick School, and Saint Marys High School before going to Agnes Scott for two years. Early in her life Sally declared herself an avid Democrat and lifelong Episcopalian. She remained so until the end.Sally married Ned at All Saints Chapel on Oct. 8, 1955. Their first two children were born during Neds years in the Air Force, and their third in Charlottesville, Va., where Ned received his PhD in Biology. In 1964 the couple moved to Greensboro, N.C., where Ned was a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In addition to raising her three children, Sally worked at the Benjamin Branch Library and in three different administrative positions at Page High School. The couple was active at St. Francis Episcopal Church for over 25 years. During this time Sally co-chaired the parishs annual Every Member Canvass with her husband, served on the altar guild and sang alto in the choir.In 1995 they returned to Sewanee for the 18 years of their retirement. Sally held offices in the Fortnightly cultural society, writing and presenting regular papers, and served on the altar guild at All Saints. She was an active supporter of the Gay-Straight Alliance and a Sponsor in the Catechumenate program. With Ned she served as co-president of the Friends of the Library, and of the Friends of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. With her husband, old friends, and family, she was an enthusiastic traveler to western Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, Turkey and Russia.She is survived by her sister, Helen Buck Reynolds; her children, John Stratton McCrady, Helen Tucker McCrady and Edward de Bernire McCrady; and her six grandsons.The funeral service is to be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at All Saints' Chapel with interment of Sally and Ned's cremains following at the University Cemetery.
