Charles Howell

Jr.Charles Wilburn Howell Jr., 68, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2013.Charles was a graduate of Soddy-Daisy HS Class of 1963. He played freshman football and then turned to boxing. He was a member of the Red Bank Jaycee boxing team 1961-63, coached by Skipper Fairbanks, where he won the 105 lb Sub-Novice, 112 lb Novice and the 118 lb open Golden Gloves Championships. Most of his wins were by first round knockouts, with what was called a Devastating Left Hook.After High School he became an Ironworker where he progressed to be one of the best structural ironworkers in the area. He later was voted by the members of his local to take over the apprenticeship training program and assistant Business Agent for local 704. He then stepped down from the BA Job to start his own business "Dixie Contractors", a steel fabrication business. He coached his sons in youth baseball and football at Middle Valley where he donated time and materials to build the first concession /press box at the fields. He also coached the Chattanooga Boxing Club for several years in the early 70s. In 1970 he won the 126 lb open Golden Gloves Championship and represented Chattanooga in the Southern GG in Knoxville Tenn.He was preceded in death by father, Charles "Dutch" Howell; mother, Aleen Howell.He is survived by his four children, their mother and his first wife Pasty; sons, Chuck Howell, Jeff Howell, Brian (Charity) Howell; and daughter, Kristy Howell; sister, Jackie Bowman; and brother, Jerry (Peggy) Howell; and 10 grandchildren.Charlie was a very hard worker in what he worked for all his life, a home, business, and financial security. His health went downhill over the last few years, and he spent as much of that time as he could with his stepgrandson (Noah) who he cherished and adored above everything else in his later life.Charles was a Member of New Salem Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ted Painter officiating.
