Herschel WoodburnRev. Herschel Woodburn, 85, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday Aug. 24, 2013."The best is yet to come," speaking of the born again believer. Herschel Woodburn often made the statement in the pulpit and elsewhere. That "best" came for him Saturday, Aug. 24, when God said, "It's time to come home." He graduated to glory.Herschel was born to W.A. and Bertha Woodburn of Sacramento, Ky. He preached Gods Word for 53 years, and his first pastorate was in Clarksville, Tenn., at Pleasant View Baptist Church. He served four years in pioneer work in Dayton, Ohio in the early sixties, pastored Maplewood Baptist (now Broadmoor Bapt.) in Nashville, was called to Concord Baptist of Chattanooga in 1972 as Associate Pastor, and served as pastor at Silverdale Baptist Church for over 14 years. He retired from Westview Baptist in 1994 and spent 10 years as an interim pastor in several different churches around and near Chattanooga.Herschel was a wonderful husband, father, Papaw and friend to many.He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one brother; and a grandson.He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Ama Dawn Woodburn; brothers, C.W. and Bobby Woodburn; sister, Katherine Cabbage, all of Sacramento, KY., daughter Lynne Clark (Butch), of Owensboro, Ky.; sons, Jeffrey (Katherine), of Signal Mountain and Gary Woodburn, of Chattanooga, three grandchildren, Amanda Sizemore (Ross), of Madisonville, Ky. and Tyke and Lindsey Woodburn, of Chattanooga; great-grandson, Joshua Sizemore; stepgranddaughter, Megahan Murdock; stepgreat-granddaughter, Lailah Murdock, of Chattanooga; and a foster son, David (Kandie) Veridal and their three children, Joshua, Jeremy and Landree Veridal.Herschel was a member of Concord Baptist Church on East Brainerd Road, where a memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. David King officiating.Visit www.heritagefh.com to share words of comfort to the family and view the memorial tribute.In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Concord Baptist Church.Our special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga and to the Standifer Place nursing home staff who were so kind.The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road.
