Thomas Green

Thomas Plantz Green, 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013. Tom was born on May 18, 1919 in New York City, and grew up in Warsaw, Ill. He received a degree in economics from Knox College, and served in World War II as a Naval pilot and flight instructor. He was a loving husband to his wife for 67 years and together, they raised their family in Chicago, Ill., where he ran a family business, Ga., Meyer and Sons, and later he was a vice president with Jewel Foods. In 1993, Tom and Cynthia retired to Aiken, S.C., where they spent 17 wonderful years, before moving to Chattanooga in 2009 to be closer to family. Evident throughout Toms life was his strong faith and devotion to his family. One of his greatest pleasures came from travelling and he enjoyed planning many memorable vacations for his family. In addition to his beloved wife, Cynthia, Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William and Grace Green; and his granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Fisher. A devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, he leaves behind his four children, Susan Gost, Chicago, Ill., Cynthia Jane Paulsen (Bruce) Chattanooga, Thomas Green (Ruth) Virginia Beach, Va., and Julie Fisher, Lookout Mountain. His legacy will also continue in the lives of 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Belmonte (Anthony), Jeffrey Gost (Jacqueline), Abigail and Andrew (Natalie) Paulsen, Amy Goff (Josiah), Thomas, Christopher and Patrick Green, and Daniel and Kathryn Fisher. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Grace and Jack Belmonte, and Abigail, Emily and Madalynn Gost. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Forest Hills Cemetery. Tom's family would like to thank Debbie Henderson, his caregiver, whose loving and loyal friendship blessed him and his family these last two years. Joining Debbie in caring for Tom were devoted caregivers, Tonita Jenkins and Carrie Harris. Toms family would also like to thank Elmcroft of Hamilton Place Assisted Living where he was encouraged and cared for by a wonderful staff.
