Wayne Potter

Wayne Potter Wayne M. Potter passed away at home in the care of his loving family Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 after a courageous, determined battle with lung cancer at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his parents Edith Holt Potter and James Fred Potter and his special dog, Jack. Wayne served in the U.S. Air Force for four years with the 449th Airborne Missile Maintenance Squadron at Kincheloe AFB, Michigan and 2 years in the Reserves. He was a 1962 graduate of Central High School. He attended the University of Chattanooga / UTC where he also met the love of his life in Spanish class. He was an avid Chattanooga Mocs fan and spent many Saturdays in recent years at Finley Stadium cheering the football team to victory. He began his work career at Chattanooga Belting & Supply / SOS followed by Walter A. Wood and later owned his industrial supply business, Watt Chem, Inc. until he retired in 2007. Wayne enjoyed playing golf throughout his life. He began playing at Brainerd Golf Course as a child where he also caddied and learned the game. He was a member of Valleybrook Golf & Country Club for many years. Most recently he spent most of his time at Brainerd Golf Course in the low ball where it all began. Wayne also enjoyed many long rides with Pam on his 1979 Honda Goldwing through the beautiful mountains of east Tennessee and NC. He especially cherished family vacations at Siesta Key in Sarasota, FL where we celebrated his last birthday. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 42 years, Pamela Standifer Potter; his two daughters- Holly Potter Peck, spouse Sean Peck, and Jennifer Potter Johnson, spouse Steven Johnson; two granddaughters Karagen Peck and Reece Johnson; his brothers Larry Potter and Donnie Potter; his sisters Tommye Speitz and Joyce Perry; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and many wonderful and loving friends. The funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he was a member since 1976. Rev. Suzanne N. Smitherman, Rev. Donald A. Fishburne, Rev. D. Andrew Olivo, officiating. Interment will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 142 Memphis, TN 38101-9908 or St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The family welcomes friends for visitation at Heritage Funeral Home today from 3-6 p.m. and Monday 5-7 p.m. to share the many adventures of his life. The family will also receive friends Tuesday Dec. 3, 1-1:30 p.m. at the church. Visitors are asked to please use the Bonner Tower entrance at the back of the church on Tuesday.
