Mary Shutting

Mary Katherine ShuttingMary Katherine Becker Shutting, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013.She was born on March 1, 1923, in Spartanburg, S.C., to the late William and Mazie Kendrick Becker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl R. "Pat" Shutting; and brother, William "Billy" Becker.Mary Katherine was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and a devoted volunteer for the Ladies of Charity organization.Mary Katherine was a loving wife and mother, and a caring, thoughtful, and gracious person who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.Survivors include her children, Kay (Tom) Friday, of Chattanooga, Carl "Dolph" (Kayla) Shutting, of Plainfield, Ill., and Betsy (Lee) Brouner, of Chattanooga; sister, Anne Gribben; grandchildren, Patrick and Lindsay Shutting, Jennifer and Bobby Brouner, all of Chattanooga, and Alexa and Carl Shutting, of Plainfield, Ill.; great-grandson, Julius Shutting, of Chattanooga; as well as many nieces and nephews.The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to caregivers Kim Ross, LaQuata Johnson, and Anita Burks for their tireless devotion over the past year.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church with Father Mike Creson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday prior to the funeral service.
