Charles Childers

Charles F. Childers passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2012, in Decatur, Ga. Born in Catoosa County and raised in Chattanooga, he had lived at Arbor Terrace, an assisted living facility in Decatur, for the last six years. He served in the South Pacific (US Navy) in the Second World War. On returning home, he began working for Southern Railway, continuing there until retiring in 1989. His life centered around family, church, friends and work. He is survived by his wife, Ann; son Fred and his wife Maureen; step-grandsons William, Thomas and James Evans; his sister, Martha Brown; numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, John and Winnie Childers, and sisters, Louise Swanson and Tommie Shropshire, preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Ridgedale Baptist Church where he had been a member since 1965. The family will receive visitors at the church at 10 a.m. and a reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ridgedale Baptist Church or a charity of choice.
