Tim Gooden

Jr.Tim S. Gooden Jr., of Hixson, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013. He was 87 years old.Tim was born and raised in Hixson and very proud to be a descendent of Hixsons founding family. He graduated from Hixson High School in 1943 where he played basketball, baseball and was a member of the first swing band in Hamilton County, where he played Alto Sax.Tim served our country during World War II in the U. S. Navy Medical Corp. He received his BBA degree from the University of Chattanooga and masters degree in education from Middle Tennessee State University. He was a member of the Hixson Masonic Lodge #727 F&AM and the American Legion Post #159.Tim was a longtime member of Hixson United Methodist Church and the Sam McConnell Sunday School Class. Tim taught at Hixson Junior High school his entire career, retiring in 1990 with 30 years of service, including assistant principal. Tim was a coach and mentor for football, basketball and baseball teams. He was inducted into the Hixson High Hall of Fame in 2004, and was awarded the Hixson Sports Club Award for commitment and dedication to the Hixson Community. After his retirement he worked for Avis Car Rental where he received his 20-year pin.Tim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean Smith Gooden; and his parents, Timothy Springfield Gooden Sr. and Mary Lou Powers Gooden.He is survived by his children, Mike (Linda) Gooden, Rev. Mark (Judy) Gooden and Susan Gooden; grandchildren, Lindsey (Adam) Gooden Mattern, Katie (Caleb) Gooden Calderhead, Jessica, Timothy and Kylie Gooden; brother-in-law, C. J. Smith; and several nephews and their families.The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. today, July 18, at the North Chapel and again from 6-7 p.m. on Friday, July 19, at Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343.A celebration of life service for Tim will follow at 7 p.m. on Friday at Hixson United Methodist Church with Pastor Reed Shell officiating.The staff at Avis Car Rental and Sam McConnell Sunday School class will serve as honorary pallbearers.Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Tims name to Hixson United Methodist Church.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
